- A Banglore based two month old startup "Bin Bag" is offering gifts in exchange for e-trash. The startup is currently being incubated at IIMB's NSRCEL (N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning) was started by Achitra Borgohain.
- Tessolve Semiconductor Private Ltd, a leading semiconductor engineering services company, will establish a first of its kind semiconductor testing and printed circuit board (PCB) design and fabrication facility in Visakhapatnam with an investment of Rs.250 crore. The company which was set up in 2004 has over 700 employees at its offices in Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Singapore, Santa Clara and Dallas. Tessolve is likely to get a site at Gambheeram IT Special Economic Zone or nearby area, which will be finalised shortly. Tessolve will launch its operations in the city at the newly-built incubation tower at Rushikonda. The company will build its facility after acquiring the site. The PCB will have 40 layers and it is useful for mobile, computer and other devices. It will become full-fledged unit in a span of five years with 750 direct and 450 indirect employees mostly from electrical and electronics field. Construction on the new facility will start in three to four months. Mr. Srinivas Chinamilli (Co-founder and President) said the company at present had a turnover of Rs.125 crore with 30 to 40 per cent growth rate. They would become a 3,000-employee company in next five years.
- Civil Aviation Minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Sunday said the Union government was keen on establishing an aviation academy in Puttaparthi of Anantapur district, as the existing academy in Hyderabad would come under the jurisdiction of the Telangana State in future. The Minister said regional airports would be set up in places such as Srikakulam, as they would provide connectivity between North Andhra and Rayalaseema, apart from other areas.
- Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been honoured with Global Diversity Award 2014 by British parliament for his contribution to cinema.
- Eiffel Tower, the most visited paying monument in the world got a facelift. The earlier drab first floor has been re-done and boasts a glass floor, from where visitors can have a view to the 57 sq m below. Additionally the glass safety barriers in the building have been inclined outwards.
- Haiti’s former dictator Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier, who ruled the impoverished Caribbean nation with an iron fist from 1971 until his ouster in 1986, died on Saturday after a heart attack. He was 63. The death of Baby Doc, as he was commonly known, marks the end of a dark chapter for a desperate country plundered first by his ruthless father — Francois ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier, a physician-turned-populist politician — before being further ravaged by his son.
- British schoolteacher David Bolam has been released after nearly five months of captivity in Libya, reportedly after payment of a ransom to his Islamist captors.
- Somali troops backed by African peacekeepers on Sunday recaptured the last major port in Somalia held by the Shabab, removing a key source of revenue for the Islamist militia. The Shabab, al-Qaeda’s main affiliate in Africa, exported charcoal through Barawe to Gulf countries, earning at least $25 million a year from the trade according to U.N. estimates.
- World No. 1 Novak Djokovic crushed Tomas Berdych to win the China Open and maintain a remarkable 100 per cent record in the Beijing tournament. French Open champion Maria Sharapova beat Petra Kvitova in the women’s final — a victory which moves her into second place in the rankings.
